Physical Education – GCSE

Qualification: WJEC GCSE in P.E.

Course Overview

The GCSE P.E course at Lewis School Pengam follows the WJEC syllabus.

In this course, you will develop an appreciation of physical education in a range of contexts. The course integrates theory and practice. There is a focus on participation and performance in physical activity and sport, alongside which, you will be encouraged to develop knowledge of the theoretical aspects that underpin performance sport and physical activity. 

To be successful in this course, you need to

  • Demonstrate a big commitment to sports activities, attending lunch/after school clubs, your main activity must be your priority, and representing school teams is not optional when selected
  • Demonstrate commitment to your personal fitness programme – (this is coursework)
  • Act as role models to others in the school – kit, behaviour, attitude, work rate, commitment
  • Be prepared to develop your writing and extended writing responses, a long answer and a top grade in PE requires the same quality as any other subject

If you have an interest in sport, watching sport, reading articles, discussion with parents, technology advancements etc… this will help develop your knowledge and skills and help you to do well in this subject.

Prior Learning

There are no prior learning requirements, but learners should enjoy sport and participate in sports both in and out of school.

Course Content

The WJEC GCSE in Physical Education comprises 5 units:

The written examination (2 hours) will assess your knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • 1.1 Health, training and exercise
  • 1.2 Exercise physiology
  • 1.3 Movement analysis
  • 1.4 Psychology of sport
  • 1.5 Socio-cultural issues in sport

You will also have a practical assessment where you will be assessed on your performance in three different activities: 

  • A team sport
  • An individual sport
  • One other sport (team/individual)

The main activities for the practical assessment are rugby, football, cross country and athletics.

However, if you participate in a different sport outside school and perform to a good standard, you will be allowed to use this sport as your assessment (in discussion with the teacher).
