Science and Technology

Science and Technology are hugely important in the Modern World. Developments in these areas affect everyones’ lives in many different ways, from culture and entertainment to healthcare and the environment. The New Curriculum for Wales recognises this importance and has highlighted Six Key areas in Science and Technology to be covered.

At Lewis School Pengam, Science and Technology are covered in Construction lessons which are delivered by Science or Technology Specialists depending on which of the key areas is being delivered. The Construction course covers Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, and Design and Technology. The delivery of these five disciplines covers the 6 Main Areas identified by the New Curriculum in Wales which are known as the ‘Statements of What Matters’ which include: Being curious and searching for answers is essential to understanding and predicting phenomena; Design thinking and engineering offer technical and creative ways to meet society’s needs and wants; The world around us is full of living things which depend on each other for survival; Matter and the way it behaves defines our universe and shapes our lives; Forces and energy provide a foundation for understanding our universe; and, Computation is the foundation for our digital world.

All pupils in Years 7 and 8 follow a carefully created Sequence of Learning in Construction. This allows Pupils to foster a love of Science and technology through regular opportunities for Practical work whilst also developing their critical thinking skills which will allow them to make informed judgements and decisions, whilst also meeting the Four Purposes of the Curriculum.

The Construction Sequence of Learning also prepares pupils for Key Stage 4 and the GCSE examinations by developing their knowledge and understanding of key scientific principles. This is achieved through regular practical investigations and suitable tasks which develop their Science, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills. Pupils are assessed on their skills and knowledge on a Half termly basis. Information from these assessments along with key classwork assignments are used to track and monitor pupil progress.
