Engineering – BTEC

Qualification: Pearson BTEC L1/2 First Award in Engineering

Course Overview

If you have an interest in following a career in the engineering sector, then this course is for you.

By studying this course,  you will develop your knowledge and understanding of different types of engineering such as manufacturing, automotive, electrical and mechanical.  You will also learn about processes, materials and how engineering contributes to a sustainable future.

Lessons will be a mixture of classroom-based, workshop-based and computer suite based.

This course will prepare you for apprenticeships,  further training or further study in this area.

Prior Learning

No specific prior learning requirements although an interest in engineering and mathematics would be useful.

Course Content

Students taking this qualification will study the following:

Unit 1: The Engineered World

In this unit you will learn about engineering processes used to produce modern engineered products. Learn about developments in engineering materials and technologies and understand how engineering contributes to a sustainable future.

Unit 2: Investigating an Engineering Product

In this unit you will understand the performance requirements of an engineered product. Understand the selection of specific materials for use in the components that make up an engineered product. Understand the selection and use of manufacturing processes in an engineered product and understand the quality issues related to an engineered product.

Unit 3: Health and Safety in Engineering

In this unit you will understand safe and effective working in an engineering workplace and know how to follow procedures and undertake a work activity safely. You will produce several assessed practical products that will contribute to unit 3.

Unit 6: Computer-aided Engineering

In this unit you will use a CAD system, similar to Autodesk Fusion 360, to produce engineering drawings. You will look at and investigate drawing types and styles and finally use CAM systems like CNC machines, laser cutters and 3D printers to manufacture engineering components.

Skills and processes developed in units 3 and 6 will aid progression in unit 1.
