Music – A Level

Course Overview

This course prepares you for any career or university course that involves music or performing arts. It gives you the experience of performance and allows you to further develop all your musical skills and interests. During the course, you will continue the key skills of performing, composing and appraising music that you studied at GCSE and study music from a range of styles and periods.

Course Entry Requirements

Level of performance needs to be Grade 5 at time of examination. GCSE Music or other specialised music qualification (BTEC, Grade 5 Theory).

To be welcomed back to sixth form you’ll need at least 5 GCSEs graded A* – C, two of which must be English & Mathematics. We offer resit lessons in English & Mathematics if you don’t achieve the required grades.

Course Content

Unit 1 – Performing (30%)

A performance consisting of a minimum of two pieces either as a soloist.

Unit 2 – Composing (30%)

Two compositions:

  1. A piece of at least 1-minute duration that uses the techniques associated with the Western Classical Tradition, in response to a brief set by WJEC.
  2. A free composition of at least 2 minutes duration.

 

Unit 3 – Appraising (40%)

Area of study A: The Western Classical Tradition including one set work, Symphony Number 103, Drum Roll, Haydn, Movements 1 and  2
