Physics – A Level

Course Overview

Physics is the most fundamental science, and a deeper understanding of this subject will be invaluable if you intend to pursue any science or engineering based courses. Physics is also strongly recommended for courses in Astronomy and Mathematics as it unlocks a deeper understanding to these subjects.   Although it is not essential to also be studying Mathematics at A Level it is strongly advisable. 

Course Entry Requirements

Minimum of B grade in Physics/Double Award Science

Course Specification:

WJEC GCE AS/A Level in Physics
To be welcomed back to sixth form you’ll need at least 5 GCSEs graded A* – C, two of which must be English & Mathematics. We offer resit lessons in English & Mathematics if you don’t achieve the required grades.

Course Content

The specification consists of 5 units. AS Unit 1 and AS Unit 2 will be taught in Year 12 and A2 Unit 3, A2 Unit 4 and A2 Unit 5 (Practical Exam) will be taught in Year 13 to complete the A level course. Pupils who only choose to complete Units 1 and 2 and cease to study Physics in Year 13, will gain an AS Level Physics qualification.

AS topics 

  • Motion, Energy & Matter 2 hour 15 min written exam (20%)  
  • Electricity and Light – 2 hour written exam (20%)

 

A2 topics

  • Oscillations & Nuclei – 2 hour 15 min written exam (25%) 
  • Fields & Options – 2 hour written exam Worth (25%) 
  • Practical Exam – Experimental Task (1 hour 30 min) Practical Analysis (1 hour) (10%)

 

You will complete a range of practical activities, through which you will learn new measuring techniques and develop your analytical skills.  You will be required to keep a record of all experiments and practical work that you encounter in a “Lab Book”, which must be kept up to date.
