Welcome to Sixth Form at Lewis School Pengam

Part of the Upper Rhymney Valley Partnership Consortium for September 2021

About URVP

Upper Rhymney Valley Partnership

We are pleased that you are considering remaining in full-time education and continuing your studies in the

Upper Rhymney Valley Partnership Consortium. By working closely together as a group of schools, we are able to provide a wide range of A Level, Level 3 BTEC and other Level 3 qualifications and staff at all schools are experienced and able to offer advice and guidance to support you in choosing your subjects.

Sixth form life is about more than studying for qualifications, this is a new, exciting and challenging chapter in your lives and you should try and make the most of it in different ways. Whether you choose to continue your studies at your current school or choose to study at another school in the consortium, you will benefit from strong academic and pastoral support and will be able to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities including school trips, university-led summer schools, sports and music.

Requirements

Entry to the Sixth Form

You are encouraged to move on to the Sixth Form provided you are capable of benefiting from the courses on offer and that you have a positive approach to your work.

The course that you could progress to depends on the results you achieve at Key Stage 4. The standard entry requirement is 5 Grade A* – C GCSEs or equivalent level 2 qualifications, including a grade C or above in both English and Maths.

If you have not achieved a grade C or above in English and Maths, additional lessons will be provided to support you to get these grades.

Most subjects will have their own entry requirements that you can find on this website. You can also discuss these with the Heads of Year or subject leads at each of the schools.

All schools will provide an opportunity for you to discuss your option choices before you commit to making a final choice.  There is also the possibility of some taster sessions in the second half of the summer term.

A Message from our Head Student

Studying at the Sixth Form in Lewis School Pengam has been an extremely rewarding experience for me. Choosing to study here was an obvious choice with the almost seamless transition from Year 11 to Year 12 being invaluable, and definitely one of the most beneficial factors. You can guarantee that when the time comes to start in Year 12, you’ll be greatly supported and in the same comfortable, positive and inclusive environment you’ve been in for the past five years. The teaching staff, already knowing your strengths from previous years of teaching and treating you as individuals will recognise when to challenge you and when to support you and here, they can support you better than anywhere else.
