Health and Wellbeing
Mission Statement
“To create a safe and positive working environment where pupils can explore, engage, learn and improve through activities that offer knowledge and understanding of types of health, how they are linked and how they are important for life-long learning and living.”
Pupils will experience a range of activities both in the classroom and during practical lessons to ensure we provide the stimuli and the opportunity for progression through the Citizenship curriculum at key stage three to the key stage four and five programmes. Sporting activities might be the vehicle for lessons but pupils are not assessed on how good they are in a particular sport. Pupil progress will be measured against the progression step and the 5 areas within the curriculum. Our curriculum is split into 5 areas and these areas are a focus on both practical and classroom-based lessons.
- Physical ME
- Social ME
- MY Thoughts
- MY Relationships
- MY Decisions
Pupils are encouraged to develop as a good ‘citizen’ and to understand the core values that it requires. Pupils are encouraged to show good ‘Sports-person-ship’ characteristics that include respect, humility, emotional control and positive teamwork. These characteristics can be developed both in the curriculum and through sport opportunities which are seen as an extension of the values and learning developed in class.
Our curriculum has been designed with the new curriculum for Wales and its four purposes (see bottom image), but to also nurture and honour our own school history and legacy.
“Honour the past, inspire the future”
Our aims:
Encourage and motivate pupils to engage effectively in a range of practical and classroom-based lessons, including those where they might feel ‘uncomfortable’.
Promote the development of good fundamental movement skills and transfer across a range of different activities.
To develop a good knowledge of the health topics that underpin being a good citizen, including personal hygiene.
To understand the benefits of participation in team, individual and fitness-based activities both now and in later life.
To develop independence and critical thinking skills in different activities that allow pupils to demonstrate resilience, grit, personal growth and good core values.
Encourage pupils to set personal targets in both physical and classroom environments. Pupils are never compared against others, they are competed with versions of them.
To promote good interpersonal skills through activities that include organisation, communication, responsibility, humility, respect for others and sensitivity.
To promote awareness and understanding of wider health topics and our own culture, traditions and values.
