Qualification: WJEC GCSE French

Course Overview

Modern Foreign Languages are becoming increasingly important because of their ever-increasing relevance to the world of work. Language skills are much sought after by employers in a wide range of fields and many international companies expect competence in more than one foreign language. 

The WJEC GCSE in French allows you to develop your language skills to be able to communicate with and understand speakers of French in a variety of contexts and for a variety of purposes.

The main themes studied are based upon:

Education; Youth Culture; Lifestyle; Customs and Tradition; Home and Locality; France and French-speaking countries; and  Global Sustainability.

The French Department has an excellent rate of success at preparing pupils in gaining a GCSE qualification.  Lessons are planned and resourced to be engaging and interactive which will allow you to gain confidence in all aspects of your language learning.

GCSE French is compatible with almost any combination of other subjects – arts, sciences or a mixture of both.

Prior Learning

There are no prior learning requirements to study GCSE French. The course builds on subject content which is typically taught at key stage 3 and provides a suitable foundation for the study of French at either AS, A level or similar If you do not want to progress to further study in this area, this is still a worthwhile course.

Course Content

The department follows the WJEC syllabus. 

There are 4 external examinations based upon the 4 language skills (Listening; Speaking; Writing and Reading). Each skill assessed is worth 25% of the overall qualification.
