Skills Challenge Certificate

Qualification: WJEC GCSE National/foundation Skills Challenge Certificate

Course Overview

Through completing the Skills Challenge certificate you will develop and demonstrate an understanding of and proficiency in essential and employability skills. These are the skills that employers and next stage educators value and which you need for learning, work and life.

The seven essential and employability skills are:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Digital literacy
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Planning and Organisation
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Personal Effectiveness

Prior Learning

There is no prior learning requirement, the Skills Challenge Certificate is a compulsory GCSE.  All learners will complete the same challenges and you will be awarded either the National/Foundation Certificate based on the outcome. 

The National Welsh Baccalaureate is awarded at a ‘Pass’ grade when you achieve the following at A* – C:

  • Skills Challenge Certificate
  • English Language GCSE
  • Maths/Numeracy GCSE
  • 3 Further GCSE subjects (2 can be vocational)

The Foundation Welsh Baccalaureate is awarded at a ‘Pass’ grade when you achieve a ‘Pass*’ or ‘Pass’ in the Skills Challenge Certificate and the following at A* – G:

  • English Language GCSE
  • Maths/Numeracy GCSE
  • 3 Further GCSE subjects (2 can be vocational)

Course Content

Through Welsh Baccalaureate lessons you will engage with three challenges and an individual project. Each will require you to focus on skill development either as an individual or as part of a team.  Grades available are A* – C/Pass*/Pass.

Enterprise and Employability Challenge

Global Citizenship Challenge

  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Weighting: 15%

Community Challenge

  • Planning and Organisation
  • Personal Effectiveness 
  • Weighting 15%
