Course Overview

Modern Foreign Languages are becoming increasingly important because of their ever-increasing relevance to the world of work. Language skills are much sought after by employers in a wide range of fields and many international companies expect competence in more than one foreign language.

The WJEC AS and A level in French provides an engaging and exciting opportunity for students to build on their previous study of French. In addition to a strong focus on developing learners’ confidence and fluency in spoken French, pupils will develop an insight into other cultures and gain a greater awareness of intercultural differences.

A Level French is compatible with almost any combination of support subjects, whether arts, sciences or a mixture of both.

Course Entry Requirements

Minimum grade ‘B’ in French GCSE.

WJEC GCE AS/A Level in French
To be welcomed back to sixth form you’ll need at least 5 GCSEs graded A* – C, two of which must be English & Mathematics. We offer resit lessons in English & Mathematics if you don’t achieve the required grades.

Course Content

The specification content covers the two main areas of interest:

  1. social issues and trends
  2. political, intellectual and artistic culture.

These areas are divided into four themes:

Year 12

Theme 1: Being a young person in a French-speaking society

Theme 2: Understanding the French-speaking world

Year 13

Theme 3: Diversity and difference

Theme 4: France 1940-1950 – The Occupation and the post-war years

Assessments comprise of speaking, listening, reading, translation and both critical and analytical writing
