Geography is a rigorous A Level and is well respected by universities and employers alike. Through studying this subject, you will develop transferable and wide-ranging skills, which include analytical, ICT, statistical, research and presentation. The WJEC GCE AS and A level in Geography encourage you to apply geographical knowledge, theory and skills to the world around you.
You will develop a critical understanding of the world’s people, places and environments in the 21st Century and develop a knowledge and understanding of contemporary geographical concepts. This course draws on both physical and human geography, explores people-environment interactions and encourages the development of fieldwork at the local level.
An A Level in Geography will enable you to progress to higher education and also a range of employment opportunities.
Minimum grade ‘B’ in Geography GCSE.
The A Level course comprises five units taught across two years.
AS Unit 1: Changing Landscapes & Tectonic Hazards – Written examination 2 hours
AS Unit 2: Changing Places and Fieldwork Investigation – Written examination 1 hour 30 minutes
A2 Unit 3: Global Systems, Global Governance & 21st Century Challenges – Written examination 2 hours
A2 Unit 4: Tectonic Hazards & Contemporary Themes in Geography Investigation – Written examination 2 hours
A2 Unit 5: Independent Investigation – 3000 – 4000 words – Non exam assessment – (20% of final grade)
