Course Overview

This qualification develops themes required for further study in the very rewarding Health and Social Care sector.  This qualification is ideal for students who know they want to pursue a Health and Social Care related degree at university, for example, nursing, social work, early years and childhood studies. This qualification is not designed for direct entry into employment in this sector.

Course Entry Requirements

Standard 6th form entry.

Course Specification:

WJEC GCE AS/A Level in Health and Social Care
To be welcomed back to sixth form you’ll need at least 5 GCSEs graded A* – C, two of which must be English & Mathematics. We offer resit lessons in English & Mathematics if you don’t achieve the required grades.

Course Content

The course comprises a mixture of mandatory and optional units.

Mandatory Units: 

Unit 1: Promoting Quality Care and Communication

The content of this unit includes:

  • Factors affecting the quality of life of individuals
  • Principles of care
  • Caring skills and techniques
  • Communication
  • Barriers to communication and quality care
  • Rights and responsibilities of providers and individuals

Unit 2: Promoting Good Health

  • The content of this unit includes:
  • Perspectives of health and well-being
  • Factors that affect health and well-being
  • Preventative measures to avoid ill health
  • Job roles of key workers in Health Promotion
  • Techniques used within Health Promotion

 

The optional units are decided by the school.
