Course Overview

Medical Science is the science of dealing with the maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of diseases. If you are interested in a career related to healthcare and medical research and if you enjoy and have been successful in science, this course is suitable for you.

The qualification covers the key areas of health, physiology and disease, and provides the opportunity to study pharmacology, physiological measurement, clinical testing and medical research. This qualification will equip you with the scientific knowledge and understanding, as well as practical skills that will support progression to a range of job roles within health care and areas of life sciences.

Course Entry Requirements

A* – C in separate science or double award science.

Course Specification:

WJEC Level 3 Applied Diploma in Medical Science
To be welcomed back to sixth form you’ll need at least 5 GCSEs graded A* – C, two of which must be English & Mathematics. We offer resit lessons in English & Mathematics if you don’t achieve the required grades.

Course Content

In order to achieve the Level 3 Applied Diploma in Medical Science learners are required to complete 6 units:

  • Human health and disease
  • Physiological measurement techniques
  • Medical Science research methods
  • Medicines and treatment of disease
  • Clinical laboratory techniques
  • Medical case study

 

Each unit has a clear medical science purpose that focuses on the learning of scientific knowledge, understanding and skills into a meaningful context.

The course is assessed using a combination of internal and external assessment.
