In this course, you will develop an appreciation of physical education in a wide range of contexts. The course integrates theory and practice. There is a focus on participation and performance in physical activity and sport, alongside which, you will be encouraged to develop a broad and detailed knowledge of the theoretical aspects that underpin performance sport and physical activity.
In addition, you will also have the opportunity to develop an awareness of contemporary issues relevant to physical education and sport in Wales. This qualification builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established at GCSE and provides a suitable foundation for the study of physical education or a related area through a range of higher education courses, progression to the next level of vocational qualifications or employment.
GCSE PE grade B or above is an essential requirement for this course. You must also be active as a performer in at least one sport.
The WJEC AS and A level in physical education comprise four areas of study:
1. Exercise physiology, performance analysis and training
2. Sport psychology
3. Skill acquisition
4. Sport and society
The specification is divided into a total of 4 units, 2 AS units and 2 A2 units.
Year 12
AS Unit 1: Exploring physical education
Written examination: 1 hour 45 mins
AS Unit 2: Improving personal performance in physical education
Non-exam assessment
In this unit, you will be assessed as a performer and coach or official. You will also complete a Personal Performance Profile.
Year 13
A2 Unit 3: Evaluating physical education
Written examination: 2 hours
A2 Unit 4: Refining personal performance in physical education
Non-exam assessment
In this unit, you will be assessed as a practical performance in one activity as a layer/performer, coach or official and you will also carry out an investigative research project.
